Alternative Methods to Reduce Asthma Attacks?

Joulieta: What is the role of alternative therapies, such as relaxation methods, to enhance breathing quality and to reduce the stress that could trigger an asthma attack? Are there any studies that prove relaxation works?

Dr. Kraemer: Moderate or severe asthma can create an overriding sense of panic and anxiety. This stems from the very real fear that you will not be able to breathe during an attack. This may lead to frantic overuse of inhalers and erratic over-treatment of your symptoms when you enter the early stages of an attack. Relaxation methods could help you prevent panic and avoid the poor decision-making that can occur. If relaxation methods help produce this control, then I am all for it.

A recent 11-page review of alternative medicine in asthma treatment appeared in the October issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinic Immunology. Authors Ziment and Tashkin from UCLA analyzed the current evidence that might support the use of herbal therapies, acupuncture, various types of body manipulation (osteopathy and chiropractic), psychological therapies, and homeopathic remedies, as well as unusual drugs, surgical procedures, and other treatment. Their summary: “There is little evidence in favor of these unorthodox treatments, although they are very often reported on favorably by patients.” My advice in these unproven therapies is “buyer beware.” And tell your physician about your desire to explore alternative therapies, so you get thoughtful advice about the potential value or harm of incorporating these into your treatment plan.
