- Andrew:
- So the worst that I can imagine would be a woman who knows she has moderate to severe asthma, goes into her pregnancy, and maybe also smokes.
- Dr. Schatz:
- Right. And there’s no question that’s a terribly bad combination, and one of the difficulties. I mean, you would think that women with asthma, or anybody with asthma, would be less likely to smoke. But, in fact, if you look at populations defined during pregnancy as to whether or not they have asthma, unfortunately, the women with asthma are more likely to smoke, and presumably, that’s contributing to why they have asthma. Absolutely.
That’s a combination that you really try to avoid because it not only will have an effect on the asthma, but it can directly affect the health of the baby, particularly birth weight.
