Corticosteroid Spray and Infections

TURNER:
Okay. We have Joyce from Port Townsend. Welcome to the program, Joyce.
JOYCE:
Thank you.
TURNER:
I understand you want to talk about corticosteroid sprays and infections?
JOYCE:
Well, yes.
TURNER:
Go ahead and describe your situation and what your concern is for Dr. Stempel?
JOYCE:
All right. Thank you. The instructions, I’m on a corticosteroid oral inhalant such as Azmacort, and the instructions which come with it caution the patient to rinse the mouth after the use in order to prevent overgrowth of organisms. For example, thrush or whatever. Now I wondered if I were to use a nasal steroid inhalant also such as Flonase, whether there is risk of some sort of overgrowth in your nose, since you can’t exactly rinse out your nose the way you can your mouth.
TURNER:
Dr. Stempel?
STEMPEL:
Okay. You’re absolutely right. With the inhaled steroid for your lungs such as Azmacort or Beclovent or Flovent, what you want to be very careful about is after you inhale them you want to rinse out your mouth to protect yourself against getting a yeast infection or candida infection. If you use a spacer, that might give you some extra safety. Azmacort as an example actually has a built in spacer and there are several other good spacers that you can use with any of the other inhaled steroids. It doesn’t seem to be a problem though if you take medicines like Flonase and spray them into your nose. You don’t really have to worry about that as being a problem. We essentially never see any overgrowths of candida or yeast infections in the nose. So I wouldn’t worry about that.
JOYCE:
Oh, that’s reassuring. Thank you.
TURNER:
Thanks for your questions, Joyce.
