How do You Know Which Inhaler Is Right For You

Rick:
How do you know which inhalers are right for you? Previously, he had a doctor prescribe Ventolin, but his understanding is that Ventolin is not used to prevent attacks but is an emergency, quick-fix sort of drug.

Dr. Stempel:
There are two classes of medications. One are those emergency, quick fix or what’s called the rapid reliever. And then there are the preventor medications. The reliever medicines are the albuterols, the Ventolins, the Proventils, and the preventor mediations are the inhaled corticosteroids, the Cromolyns, the Nedocromils. And basically if you’re having symptoms more than a couple of times a week, if you’re waking up at night, if you’re not able to exercise, then using the preventor medications are appropriate. So you want to be using things like the inhaled corticosteroids and then you always want to have available something like albuterol if you have a breakthrough episode. And as we’ve discussed a little bit earlier, it’s very important to stick with your inhaled corticosteroids to be really compliant with them. If you need to be on them, the side effects appear to be fairly minimal compared to the benefits that you’re going to achieve from using them.

Rick:
Well, Dr. Stempel, thanks again for your insight and your information. I’m sure it was appreciated by all.
