- We also have a chance to communicate with you via e-mail. And we did receive an e-mail question from Matt here in Seattle. He’s lived here since June of 1996. So Matt would like to know, how do you know which inhalers are right for you? Previously, he had a doctor prescribe Ventolin, but his understanding is that Ventolin is not used to prevent attacks but is an emergency, quick fix sort of drug.
- STEMPEL:
- Yeah. There are two classes of medications. One are those emergency, quick fix or what’s called the rapid reliever. And then there are the preventor medications. So the reliever medicines are the Albuterols, the Ventolins, the Proventils, and the preventor mediations are the inhaled corticosteroids, the Cromolyns, the Nedocromils. And basically if you’re having symptoms more than a couple of times a week, if you’re waking up at night, if you’re not able to exercise, then using the preventor medications are appropriate. So you want to be using things like the inhaled corticosteroids and then you always want to available something like Albuteral if you have a breakthrough episode. And as we’ve discussed a little bit earlier, it’s very important to stick with your inhaled corticosteroids to be really compliant with them, and if you need to be on it, the side effects appear to be fairly minimal compared to the benefits that you’re going to achieve from using them.

- Well, Dr. Stempel, thanks again for your insight and your information. I’m sure it was appreciated by all.
