Andrew:
Does oil heat have any adverse effect on patients with asthma? Is gas or oil heat less likely to cause irritation for asthma patients?
Dr. Shapiro:
Forced air, gas and electric are all fairly good ways to heat the home. Propane heaters and kerosene and fumey agents that give off chemicals are not good. But oil heat is usually confined in a proper forced-air system and is not particularly a problem. Having said that, it’s still a good idea to think about filters if you have certain types of allergy problems, and making sure that you’re keeping the system clean is a good idea.
Andrew:
And of course those wood fireplaces, or even the smoke from your neighbor’s wood fireplace could be a problem as well.
Dr. Shapiro:
Right. Wood heat is not the best heat for people with asthma or other respiratory diseases.
