Long Term Side Effects of Albuterol

TURNER:
Spencer from Seattle is next to join us here on the Asthma Education Network. Welcome Spencer.
SPENCER:
Hi. Thank you.
TURNER:
And what’s your issue with asthma you’d like to talk about?
SPENCER:
Well, thanks for taking my call. I have a five year old son with asthma. We use a peak flow meter and we have a real good ability to manage it. So he’s only been in the hospital once and that was the first time, when he was first diagnosed with asthma, and I credit that to just having a really good pediatrician. Are there any known long term side effects on the regular use of Albuterol? I guess that’s really causing me the most grief.
TURNER:
Dr. Stempel?
STEMPEL:
Well, I think that when you’re using it in combination with the inhaled corticosteroid, my concern is significantly reduced. I think the only long term side effect might be from the over use of the drug. We would usually recommend in many situations not using the Albuterol when your child is asymptomatic, so when your child’s peak flow is normal, we probably would just use the anti-inflammatory medicines and back off on the Albuterol at that time. And then restart the Albuterol if there are signs or symptoms of a cold, or if the peak flow starts to dip.
SPENCER:
Okay. Thank you.
TURNER:
Thank you for taking part in the program.
