Multiple Sclerosis and Bladder Problems

Kate:
I have MS, and I have a lot of bladder problems, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for recurring urinary tract infections.
Dr. Lynch:
Well, certainly bladder problems are very common in people with MS. Recurrent infections can be a problem. I’d say first and foremost an evaluation about the specific bladder problems that you might be having because how we treat bladder symptoms of MS depend on the specific type of problem. Whether the bladder is over-full and not emptying properly can contribute to infections or in fact if the bladder is spastic and frequently the person has to go frequently and urgently. And that’s a different problem, so we treat that with medication. So, there are two different forms of treatment depending upon what the bladder problem is. In general, in terms of infections, the common thing women with MS can do is make sure you have plenty of liquids, and that means about 8 to 12 cups of liquid a day. And people with MS tend to shy away from liquids, but that’s important in managing infections. That would be one issue. You may want to consider making the urine more acidic. That can include the use of cranberry juice. Some people use vitamin C to help maintain the acidity of the urine, which decreases the risk for an infection. And make sure you’re attentive in the way you wipe from front to back, which can contribute to infections in women.
