We had another e-mail question from Rob here in Milton, Washington. “Hi, Dr. Shapiro” he writes, “How often can a 2-year-old use Pediapred? And when do side effects come into play?”
Dr. Shapiro:
Pediapred is another oral steroid like the Prelone we were talking about, and like Prednisone. In a two-year-old it’s not unusual if there’s asthma, for every virus to cause a big upset. And little guys and girls get viruses frequently, so every six or eight weeks there may be the need for a few days or even a week of Pediapred. It’s important that the use be minimized. However, it is also important that it be used appropriately and started if asthma is going downhill. It shouldn’t be the main controller medication that’s used on a chronic, ongoing basis. If your child is needing it frequently it means that there’s enough asthma to require some regular anti-inflammatory therapy, the sorts of things we’ve been talking about– non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or inhaled corticosteroids, as maintenance. So Pediapred is safe to use periodically, but it shouldn’t be the maintenance medication.
