Side effects of Prelone

Andrew:

We have another question that’s been e-mailed to us from Marilyn who is in Everett, Washington. And she writes, “My 3-year-old daughter has had asthma for a year now, and right now she’s been two weeks on, two weeks off Prelone. Are there side effects of Prelone?”
Dr. Shapiro:
Prelone is an oral steroid medication, and it’s the most potent. It’s like prednisone or methylprednisilone. These are medications that are very, very potent for stopping asthma attacks–very good for stopping the inflammation in the bronchial tubes during a bad episode. And yes, they do have side effects. Prelone can cause irritability and really big swings in mood and behavior, and big increases in appetite with weight gain. But these problems are short-lived, they only last for the few days of the prednisone course. Usually prednisone, or Prelone, is used for three or five, or at most seven-to-ten days. And the side-effects go away right after the medication is withdrawn. Prelone shouldn’t be used as an everyday maintenance medication. There are other medications–we were talking about the inhaled corticosteroids, which are topical versions of Prelone that don’t have those side-effects and can give you the long-term benefit without the problems that Prelone can cause.
