What Would You Say to a Child With Asthma?

Andrew:
Dr. Gower, so, we talked about the worried parents, but certainly a child who’s aware that they’re having trouble breathing and they’re being asked to take these medications. What do you say to the child? And if we have some listening, what would you say to them about what their life can be like even though they’ve got this condition in their lungs?
Dr. Gower:
I say first of all, I try to explain what they have, and I try to explain it, and then I tell them it’s very treatable. It’s not curable, but their activity should not be limited. They can do anything they want. All they have to do is understand it, do the right things, not do the wrong things like smoking, and take their medicines if they have a persistent problem. And they can run, they can play, they can do gymnastics, they can dance, and they should not really be restricted to any great extent at all if they control this thing. They should take control of the disease, rather than letting the disease control them.
Andrew:
Well, that’s a very positive note, and I think for our listeners you can see that with the advice and partnership of a specialist like Dr. Gower and his colleagues around the country, you really can take control of this condition.
